In the 19th century the problem was that God is dead. In the 20th century the problem is that man is dead. |

The majority of well adapted individuals have lost their own self at an early age and replaced it completely by a social self offered to them by society. They have no neurotic conflicts because they themselves… have disappeared.
Free man is by necessity insecure, thinking man by necessity uncertain.
One cannot be deeply responsive to the world without being saddened very often.

Love isn't something natural. Rather it requires discipline, concentration, patience, faith, and the overcoming of narcissism. It isn't a feeling, it is a practice… Love is not primarily a relationship to a specific person; it is an attitude, an ordination of character which determines the relatedness of the person to the world as a whole, not toward one object of love... Love is the only sane and satisfactory answer to the problem of human existence… There is hardly any activity, any enterprise, which is started out with such tremendous hopes and expectations, and yet which fails so regularly, as love.
Integrity simply means a willingness not to violate one's identity.
Both dreams and myths are important communications from ourselves to ourselves. If we do not understand the language in which they are written, we miss a great deal of what we know and tell ourselves in those hours when we are not busy manipulating the outside world.
Understanding a person does not mean condoning.

-- Erich Fromm, German social psychologist & philosopher, 1900 - 1980

These photos are from Lake Merritt, Jack London Square and part of the Train Station in Oakland, CA.
Canon Rebel, Fuji 35mm Color
Scanner was broken at the time, so these are crappy digital photos of sweet film photos.
Select images were enlarged to 30" and mounted on foamcore for display in a corporate loft/condo building in Jack London Square.

Long overdue. I took this picture of Punkins earlier in 2008 just before she died. P swears Punkins could levitate. Pelican Bay may run shit but guess who runs Pelican Bay. This girl. Badass dog. Fiercely loyal. There are some amazing photos Tobin took back when Punkins and Ginger were puppies... then when I look through all the ones I have... you know she came full circle. Peace -

Voightlander Bessa (model c1939~1941). The contact sheet = straight to the cutting room floor... Will probably have better luck working with the negatives... But I had no idea if Lara's Voightlander would even work. It seemed to be mechanically intact but the shutter release would occasionally stick and the dials were not incredibly accurate. The 400sp color worked surprisingly well but I dont' think I'll be putting 100s in there again.
Taking pictures while riding your bike = would not advise. I think I dodged a car right after taking this // My high school
Scarlett Fever - 11th Street @ Folsom // Antonio's got eggs and tall cans. I think we're set.
SFPD vs Crack // Sometimes I forget to wind the film all the way, or forget that I already wound it to the next frame. Woops.
Mel's downtown // Still couldn't push this up enough w/o losing it
Oh and some milkshakes. // PK DJing @ the Howard St Mansion
This is my balcony ... // And this is where I sleep.

Matt made up a contact sheet of our quick studio time at CSM last week... Some of the negatives had some issues so the prints will have more controlled exposure but here's a peek at the quick & dirty, some more work for one of his classes this semester... 120mm shot w/ the Hasselblad.

OK SO. I'm pretty hyped on this camera I picked up from my coworker, I just figured out all the mechanical what-nots, and I'm about to go get food & film with Antonio then go to some hoo-hah in SF. I don't know what he's dragging me into here. Guess I'll find out.
 c. 1936 ~ 1941, Voightländer Bessa.
